What to See & Do in Mt Barker

A 'must-see' is the Mount Barker Summit (Click Here for more info), which you can access via Springs Road from the centre of the Mt Barker town or the Mount Barker Summit road from Nairne, for one of the best views in the hills. On a clear day it is possible to see Mount Lofty in the north and Lake Alexandrina in the south-east from its 517 metre elevation. There is a stone cairn on the top which tells visitors that the mountain was originally known as Yaktanga and  Wommu mu Kutra to the eastern and local Aborigines and that it was once an ancient burial site.

The local Tourist Information Office has brochures which detail walking tours in and around the Mt Barker area (over 30 historic buildings in the centre of the town).

John Dunn's flour mill, which was built in 1844 and closed down in 1894, still stands and is now used as a coffee shop and restaurant.

The SteamrangerAnother must is taking a ride on the Steam Ranger from Mt Barker through Strathalbyn and on to the South Coast beach towns of Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. Tour the Antique shops or have a picnic at Strathalbyn, visit the old Goolwa wharf area, tour the unique whale museum at Victor Harbor or take a horse drawn tram over to Granite Island.
