What to See & Do in Lobethal

The Lights of Lobethal

The annual Christmas lights festival, "The Lights of Lobethal", draws thousands of visitors each year. This tradition of Lobethal's Christmas lights began about 55 years ago with today more than 90% of all homes and businesses "lighting Up" for Christmas with spectacular displays. Transitplus provides Bus Trips to the Lobethal Lights and can be contacted on 8339 7544 for bookings.

This festival has become the largest Christmas lights display in South Australia, and possibly the largest community Christmas event in Australia. The festival runs from the second Sunday in December until New Years Eve each year (although many of the displays may be seen from end November to early in the New Year).

Lutheran Church Complex

The obvious starting point for any exploration of Lobethal is this rich complex in the town's main street. It includes the first Lutheran Seminary in Australia (a small pug wall construction) which was built in 1842, the oldest original Lutheran Church (an act of extraordinary devotion being largely built by one man with the help of the local women who carried the bricks for him) and the Lobethal Archives and Historical Museum which is open on weekends and contains a lot of information about the lives of the early German settlers. Located within the grounds are a number of interesting and historic graves.
