Hahndorf is situated in the picturesque Adelaide Hills and is renowned as the premier tourist town forthe region. To get there from Adelaide, take the South Eastern Freeway from the city of Adelaide, and turn off the Hahndorf exit, a drive from Adelaide of about 30 minutes.
Hahndorf's attraction lies in the historical value of the town: the first white settlement took place in 1839 when Prussian Lutheran families arrived, having been persecuted in their homeland. The name "Hahndorf" was derived from Captain Dirk Hahn of the ship named 'Zebra', which arrived in Adelaide in 1838 with a party of immigrants from the Eastern Provinces of Prussia. Captain Hahn stayed on to see the new arrivals were settled, after having survived a horrendous journey by sea.
This German influence is still visible today in the architecture of the old buildings, many of which still stand as homes and shops.
Hahndorf has plenty to offer the tourist or day tripper. Shops abound with goods from fine arts to delicious German and Dutch foods, souvenirs, clothing, gifts, crafts...
