Malbec

Has traditionally been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, however some varietal wine displaying good quality, colour and tannin have been produced in limited quantities. In Australia two varieties have previously been confused with Malbec and they were Dolcetta and Tinta Amarella.

Mataro

Is an important variety which is often blended with Shiraz and/or Grenache. On its own it produces a neutral and very often, astringent wine.

Merlot

Plantings are increasing, but it is susceptible to poor set and is salinity sensitive. The wine it produces is very similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, but is softer and ages more rapidly. It is usually blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Franc.

Muller-Thurgau

Is suited to cool climates as it ripens very early. It is less susceptible to frost damage but is prone to bunch rot and fungal diseases. The wines it produces are pleasant and fruity in character.

Muscadelle

Is vigorous, ripens early and can attain a very high sugar level, hence its use in sweet fortified wines. Some of those wines are of extremely high quality. Recently it has been used for dry white table wines with a full, rich flavour, similar to muscat.

Muscat Gordo Blanco

Is used for Sherries (sweet & cream), however a large quantity is blended with Sultana to produce cask, or bag-in-the-box, white wines.
